In Creel since 1985

Our story

If you don't know El Tungar... you don't know Creel.

The Quezada family, founders of El Tungar
The Quezada family.

El Tungar opened its doors in 1985. Its founders, Graciela Amaya Urquidi (Doña Chela) and Raúl Quezada Villalobos, a beloved and well-known couple in Creel, started with a small homestyle food and seafood business.

The idea was simple: give the best service, at fair prices, with the best quality and care. Over time the menu grew to 12 ready-to-serve stews, the house soups, and regional drinks like Arí, which guests welcomed warmly.

Doña Chela and Don Raúl personally ran the restaurant for decades, creating a warm room full of local stories that kept drawing more guests. The place had to be expanded three times: today it seats up to 60 people.

El Tungar is now run by Elva Quezada, the founders' daughter, who worked alongside her parents practically since the restaurant began. The passion for cooking and the house's unmistakable sazón, the family's signature seasoning, remain intact.

Since 2010 we have also catered local and state events (regional festivities, sports and corporate gatherings), serving celebrations of up to 1,000 people, buffet-style or plated.

There's a reason they call us the "Hangover Hospital"

The nickname was given to us by the people of Creel, and we wear it proudly. It's even painted on our wall. Our soups have been reviving travelers and locals for decades: menudo, pozole, birria, albóndigas and chicken soup, from 6 in the morning.

If you don't know El Tungar... you don't know Creel. Come see for yourself.
